TORCH ON: Torch on roofing consists of binding two layers of modified asphalt using a torch. The resulting membrane creates a surface that is resistant to UV & creates a waterproof barrier, bothbeing ideal for BC’s climate. Torch on systems are usually applied on flat or low slope roofs where snow or rain can easily collect and sit for extended amounts of time. A ‘typical’ system consists of a base sheet which is either mechanically fastened or glued to the surface, then the layer of cap (top) sheet is slowly unrolled onto the base while the torch is applied to it. Underneath the base sheet is where the ‘roof buildup’ rests. This usually consists of insulation topped with what is called a protector board.
Torch on membranes can also be applied to walls to create a waterproof lap over joints. Often, architects require a membrane to go over a wall before metal flashings are used as finishing.
